In a significant push towards improving digital infrastructure, ten counties in northeastern and central Pennsylvania will share over $31.25 million to extend broadband internet services. This effort is spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority, which recently awarded almost $204.2 million to facilitate 53 projects across 42 counties. The initiative aims to provide high-speed internet access to roughly 40,000 homes and businesses, enhancing connectivity in previously underserved areas.
The funding, totaling an estimated $407 million in project value, addresses crucial gaps in broadband access, primarily targeting regions previously overlooked due to financial constraints. Brandon Carson, Executive Director of the Authority, emphasized that this investment is a crucial step in connecting more Pennsylvanians to affordable, high-speed internet, which is becoming increasingly essential for education, healthcare, and business.
Local legislators have also voiced strong support for the broadband expansion. U.S. Senator Bob Casey highlighted the initiative’s role in bridging the digital divide across rural and urban areas. State Senators Lisa Baker, Marty Flynn, and Rosemary Brown praised the funding, noting its importance for educational resources, healthcare services, and economic development.
